While originally built in the 13th century, the Church of St Michael has been repeatedly damaged, especially during the Scottish Reformation and later the English Civil War (apparently Oliver Cromwell's troops stabled their horses in the nave). In the 19th century, basic attempts at restoring the church were taken, including white-washing the walls and putting in a plaster ceiling. In the 20th century, a modern steeple was introduced. Today, the cathedral is forgettable: any historic significance is hidden behind poor attempts at restoration.The ceiling, in particular, reminds me of a trend we saw frequently in Germany, where plaster would be painted with a brick like pattern, presumably to make it look like stone. The technique is poorly done, however, and does little for the presentation of the church.Whether you're interested in church ruins or well-preserved historical architecture, there are far better examples throughout the UK. Drop by if you're at Linlithgow Palace, but there's no reason to go out of your way to visit this church in its current state.
